Procedure Description:

An intradiscal injection is a minimally invasive procedure designed to address disc-related pain, such as discogenic low back pain or herniated discs. During the procedure, you will be positioned comfortably on an examination table. A local anesthetic will be administered to numb the skin and surrounding tissues to ensure your comfort during the injection.

Using fluoroscopy (real-time X-ray), our skilled physician will guide a thin needle into the intervertebral disc where the pain is suspected to originate. A contrast dye may be injected to help visualize the target area more clearly. Once the needle is accurately positioned, a medication, usually a corticosteroid or anti-inflammatory agent, will be delivered directly into the disc. This medication aims to reduce inflammation and pressure within the disc, thereby alleviating pain and promoting the disc's healing.

Risks and Complications:

Intradiscal injections are generally safe; however, as with any medical procedure, there are some potential risks and complications you should be aware of. These may include:

1. Infection: Although rare, there is a slight risk of infection at the injection site.

2. Bleeding: Some localized bruising or bleeding may occur at the needle insertion site.

3. Allergic Reaction: Although uncommon, some patients may experience an allergic reaction to the contrast dye or medication used.

4. Nerve Damage: While rare, there is a minimal risk of nerve injury during the needle placement.

5. Disc Injury: In rare cases, the injection could cause injury to the disc, leading to increased pain.

6. No Improvement: While intradiscal injections often provide pain relief, there is no guarantee that they will completely resolve your pain.

 

After the Procedure:

Following the intradiscal injection, you may experience some soreness or mild discomfort at the injection site. This is normal and can be managed with ice packs and over-the-counter pain medications. You should be able to resume your normal activities the day after the procedure, but we recommend avoiding strenuous activities for a few days.
